Grooming – 4. Definitions of Grooming

“Grooming is when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.” NSPCC

“Grooming is when a person builds a relationship with a child, young person or adult who’s at risk so they can abuse them and manipulate them into doing things.” North Wales Police

The second definition states the adult is at risk, however this can happen to any individual at any point in their life. Grooming is all about power and control. During the grooming process the perpetrator will try and break down the individuals defences, make them trust them more than their current relationships and friendships so they can then assume control.
